Think layers, layers, layers.
It can get warm in the middle of the day and then it can get very chilly in the evening or if the sun has disappeared for the afternoon.

Prepare for possibly four seasons in one day: bright, crisp sunlight in the morning; windy spells that take your breath away; the odd downpour; expect the unexpected; don't expect searing heat or dry, dusty days. Perhaps some smarter clothes for an evening out.

It's quite fun trying to dress for the weather in Scotland. We often get it wrong and get caught out. You can always buy a jumper, scarf or extra layer when you are here. 

@Kraines to each their own, I was camping around Scotland for a whole month and walked 10+ kms on many days, something I know I can't do with boots. You should absolutely bring your boots if that is your choice of comfortable walking footwear because any Scotland trip involves a fair amount of walking in variable terrain

@Kraines depending on where you want to hike, only the very advanced ones have some boggy ground to cover where boots are better. But I just wear a good pair of sport shoes with a fair amount of grip while hiking. Bring a lot of socks if hiking for obvious reason

@Kraines @kcfaye Always carry a water + windproof jacket with a hood (example of one we own). If it gets too windy or horizontal raining, it will protect you. It may not be the most stylish but really gets the job done. Shorts seems like a stretch and swimsuits only if you are comfortable swimming in cold waters, many locals here use wetsuits (which you can hire in some places I think). Hope this helps.

Kcfaye, we will be arriving in Scotland on June 2nd for two weeks.  Thus far, my biggest dilemma is trying to figure out clothing to pack!

In Edinburgh, if you are already at Mary King's Close you are very close to many fantastic attractions: Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral, The Writers' Museum, Scotch Whisky Experience. You'll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat. If you are looking particularly for Scottish dishes, try Whiski Rooms, Whiski Bar, Ghillie Dhu, Deacon Brodies, The Cellar Door, Cannonball to name but a few. Mary King's Close cafe also has some fine Scottish dishes to try. Climb up Calton Hill which is not too far from Princes Street. It's quick and you get a breathtaking view of Edinburgh's skyline.

You'll need to make your days jam packed so that you see as much as possible in the short amount of time  

Glasgow is a bit of a foodie heaven for me, I always have the best meals there! Some personal favourites are Stereo, The Flying Duck, The 78, Mono and Steak, Cattle and Roll. Take your pick - they are all great! 

While in Edinburgh if you're wanting to do the Mary King's Close tour then you'll have the castle, the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket all in the same area which will be handy, as well as a few Harry Potter fan sites - Greyfriars Kirkyard and The Elephant House cafe (if that's your thing!). There's plenty more to see in Edinburgh but those attractions will take a full day quite easily! 

Foodwise on that side of town I always enjoy Ting Thai Caravan (one of @Horizons favourites too!) as well as Paradise Palms or the good ole Baked Potato Shop on Cockburn street for cheap and cheerful.

1 day in Edinburgh seems to little but if the weather isnt horrid, a climb up Arthurs seat is a must. I also like visiting the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Hey @oneillw There isn't a railway station at Cairnryan and the 1 public transport option I know works is catching the Belfast - Glasgow bus (timetable listed here) that also takes the ferry. There are buses that take you to Stranraer railway station (it is a beautiful journey). I'd use the Traveline Scotland website to plan my travel.
