May Update of Adobe XD
Header image includes work by Simon Waloszek
Last month, we shared our roadmap for some of the new features coming in Adobe XD, and this month’s release brings us another step closer to realizing this vision. This month, we’re making some significant strides toward aligning our two desktop platforms, while releasing the first in a group of new features coming for both desktop platforms in the upcoming months.
New in Windows
Next generation layers
You’ve been very clear: one of the most highly requested feature on Windows 10 has been the Layers Panel. Now, in our May release, you can access the Layers Panel by pressing Ctrl+Y or selecting the icon in the lower left hand side of the application screen. You can use Layers for selection right now, but you won’t be able to drag and drop layers to change the Z-order yet. You’ll be able to use this feature soon in XD.
Updating shared prototypes
In this release, you can now update your shared web prototypes instead of always having to create new prototypes. Open the Sharing pop-up and click “Update” to share to the same link you had before. Your reviewers can simply refresh their link to see your new content.
PDF export
In addition to exporting to PNG and SVG, you can now export to PDF as well. Select an individual asset, an artboard, or a group of artboards to export to PDF. You can also select multiple artboards to export as a single PDF.
Copy and paste from the File Explorer
Importing assets became even easier through pasting through the File Explorer. Now, you can copy from the File Explorer and paste into XD to import the file.
Expanded language support
Bienvenue! Willkommen! XD for Windows 10 now supports French and German. You can see your UI in these languages by setting your default language in the Region & language settings panel in Windows 10.
Copy with Interaction
In this month’s release on both Mac and Windows, you can now paste objects with their wires. Copying and pasting (as well as duplicating) an object in Prototype mode will now maintain its wire, allowing you to reuse objects with interactions–like that home button–quickly, without having to rewire. If you copy and paste a set of artboards with wires in between them, we’ll maintain the interactions between them, saving you time as you iterate on your designs and transfer interactions from one file to another.
In upcoming months, you’ll be seeing some pretty major features land that will open up new functionality for both Mac and Windows.
Earlier this month, we ran a contest where you submitted a profile page designed in XD. We were thrilled to see what you were able to create using our tool. Seeing your submissions, whether shared on Behance or over Twitter using #MadeWithAdobeXD, continues to fuel our own commitment to bringing you a fluid, performant experience to let you do what you do best: design engaging workflows for your end users.
Social
We’d love to continue the dialogue! You can follow our handle @AdobeXD for updates or reach the team on Twitter using the #AdobeXD. You can also talk to us using Facebook, where we share videos and updates as well as answer questions during live sessions.
Meet some UX designers who have used Adobe XD. Learn how they got started in UX design and their creative process; check out some of their work and listen to their favorite tunes.
#MadeWithAdobeXD
While sharing your prototypes on Behance, don’t forget to tag them with #MadeWithAdobeXD and select Adobe Experience Design under “Tools Used” for the opportunity to be featured in the Adobe XD Newsletter.

Again, thanks very much for your great work on bring AdobeXD to Windows.
yes really thx. We’ll hope XD could import psd ou ai files 🙂
Thanks a lot!!!! as Adrien, also wish it could support psd (ai) in the future ))))
Mac updates???????????????????????????
Any news to mac update?
Can’t wait for a Mac update 😉
What about your early adopters? Again, this update is not moving the MacOS version significantly forward.
:umbrella:
Patched today, and doesn’t launch anymore.
Than I’ve tried to open .xd project – and it opens, but when I am trying to create “New” project from the app, it automatically closes.
And there is no error, just white screen and closed.
Forgot to say – on Windows 10
Before update its worked just fine.
It also crushes on copy/pasting from Illustrator
You should file this as a bug on https://adobexd.uservoice.com.
Posted bug, thx https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353010-adobe-xd-bugs/suggestions/19347433-crushs-on-launch-new-copy-paste-from-ai
Six moths from now: November 2017 Adobe XD update: We know it’s been 1 year since we introduced any substantial features for Mac users, but we’re still thinking about you – enjoy this, in, ui kit for the amazon fire phone. Another six months later: We’re introducing a basic grid that you’ve been asking for for the last 2 years. Meanwhile, sketch 50.0 is coming out with a way to intuitively design responsively.
That said. The copy and paste feature is great 🙂
Well, use Sketch then.
I could yeah. I am doing my current project in Figma after putting together a site w/ XD. While I like the UI and speed of XD, it’s lacking too many features and moving along too slowly in both platforms. Hopefully in a year or so it will be more fully realized.
Copy and paste interactions is huge! Yeah!!!
Layers for Windows is here! Thank you so much for your work! I can finally make the switch. 🙂
Don’t jump to fast. I think XD’s “layers” is more like an Objects palette. You can name your objects and hide them. But if you don’t name them, then they are super hard to find later in order to unhide them. But really, I have yet to understand the reason behind them making this palette at all, nor do I understand why they call them Layers.
Any explanation would be welcome.

It’s great but I’m still waiting for symbols on Windows
after all this time I cant wait to see what you have in plan for the mac…
What exactly you are missing on Mac??
When add gradient to Windows?
This is what you need most, and you can’t work without adding
Gradients are actively in development! You can get an Email when it’s ready by upvoting: https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007-adobe-xd-feature-requests/suggestions/17452831–win-linear-gradients-support
Please, add digital ink support for Windows!!
I absolutely love XD more and more each day <3. Congratulations Guys… You have made a great job!
Copying with interaction is a welcome addition… but where are basic layout features, such as underlining text and dotted/dashed strokes, in the roadmap? Prototyping features aren’t useful if I don’t have the tools to create the layout.

Apparently Mac users cant read when they say, ‘ We are concentrating on bring platforms up to par and then new features will flow.’ Ah well.
As a windows user we thankyou! Great new features. Looking forward to Z index layers :)! Keep up the good work!
The essential thing is the gradient function
First and foremost, Love your software !
Would like to see:
– Sticky Elements (MUCH needed in building a prototype)
– Import Ai files
Definitely upvote on https://adobexd.uservoice.com! Both of those stories are there – you can simply search for them and click on “Vote.”
Guys, you really need to speed things up here for ALL users. Sketch is still leagues ahead of you and there are other, more advanced solutions popping up all the time. How is it that we can copy CSS properties in Illustrator but not in XD??? I love the idea of an app “with innovative tools that eliminate speedbumps and delivers breakthrough performance on everything from wireframes and high-fidelity designs to interactive prototypes” that I can use seamlessly with my other CC apps, so where the hell is it???
when will we see Gradients? it’s the only thing I’m missing to fully use the Windows version
FUCK YES!!!!
Thanks for the progress.
Looking forward to:
– Shapes with gradient colours
– Smart Objects / Library (similar to Photoshop, one instance, multiple copies)
– On prototype, show artboards as overlays (with Fade In, Slide In etc).
We need new features for Mac and not just updates for Windows! Seriously…
You guys keep focusing on Windows updates and not adding new features. If next month doesn’t bring in new features, I’m going back to Sketch.
Thumbs up!
Go back then
You really need to learn to do more than one thing at once. Windows users not having anything, and then it taking for ever to be fully featured, and now macs being left stagnant before a viable version for business is realised. I really like what is there, and the workflow of XD, but right now my office is going to make the choice to use a different workflow because XD is still lacking in some of the basics.
Please start adding things like fixed elements, overlays, hover states etc., or lots of your customer will have started down a different path before you can do anything about it.
I’ve had to get a subscription to UXPin because XD is still missing too many fundamental features (seriously, no hover yet). Its been ages since we had a decent Mac update.
thanks for the update!
gradients and basic image adjustments(brightness, contrast, shadows, highlights) without going back and forth with photoshop. that would be a time saver for me
Great news … Thanks a lot
So my XD updated today but there is no indication of what updates where made on the mac. Is nothing new?
We do have a new feature, and a bunch of things under the hood that will unlock some awesome functionality int he future!
Affinity Designer or Sketch will bethe path to follow? maybe we have to wait another year to XD be complete and another year for the windows version? by the way thanks for killing Fireworks. we love fireworks.
Really need some basic character and paragraph controls + styles! And global swatches. It’s a pain to update these manually on 100+ boards. Need to get some InDesign automation into XD.
Completely agree! Please bring in some more type & paragraph features.
To me, hover and fixed elements are imperative to my work
Still no gradients for win users. That must be a joke having in mind that gradients are trending right now…

Man, some of y’all are just ungrateful crybabies. For everyone complaining about the Mac being forgotten, you remember all those months we were enjoying XD while everyone else waited for a Windows version? Yeah, you were not complaining then. Stop being so damn selfish and give the XD team a break while they bring Windows users onboard too man, damn. Peace✌️!
irony is that the post’s featured image is adobe xd on a imac/macpro mockup but the post topic is (once again) about an update on windows.. im a mac user and i feel left out because they focus on windows, but i understand, its natural because we have sketch while windows users dont.
I really would like to know what are Mac users missing, they have everything they need to build anything, while windows features are still not even 70% of Mac’s.
one major feature we re missing is method of exporting for developers, a compatibility with zeplin, or built in guidelines or convert elements into css. something that will make it into a production software inside a company
I really miss those gradients. 🙁
At this speed in development, Sketch with all its great plugins, will be unsurpassable.
When will you give the plugin developers give their dev time? You don’t even support plugins. It will – if you give – take a lot of time/years. 🙁 Today anything will be discussed with the community first, then this agile shit. Why not copy Sketch features first and make them better?
why is the copy & paste text not working as is?
for example
when I copy the whole text with fontawesome Icon and paste it all together it doesn’t paste as is? can we update this?
Seriously where are MAC updates??? So disappointing.
It would be nice if Adobe supports XAML standardization, and made XAML its code behind Adobe XD, including integration options with Xamarin.Form.
https://github.com/Microsoft/xaml-standard
Will there be a gradient feature?
It’s great, but where updates for mac?
Muh.. Can we atleast expect some updates for mac users in June release?
