Why is there no audio upload feature for wordpress for android, I feel it is going to be a huge boost for android users since blackberry users already have this feature, if there is any reason why this feature cannot be added the wordpress community should be made aware

This is a question for https://make.wordpress.org/mobile/ but I suspect it's because some older OSs for Android are limiting.

Have you heard about the concept of fragmentation? If not, have a gaze here: http://www.elegantmedia.com.au/blog/fragmented-app-ecosystem/.

Well, it so happens that the Android operating system of Google is fragmented. There are hundreds of different Android mobile devices all of different shapes, sizes and features. Moreover, Android OS is developed by Google, which doesn't manufacture any of this hardware. So, you can imagine the gap between the software and the hardware. And, no matter how hard mobile device manufacturers try to fill the gap it is impossible for the same OS to dovetailingly (for want of a better term) support all the varied Android devices.

Now, if WordPress were to introduce this audio upload feature, it would have to support all Android mobile devices. It's practically impossible, especially considering how already complicated WordPress CMS is. So, although apps like SoundCloud find it easy because of their limited scope, it's possible but impossible difficult to achieve. And, as Mika said, some older Android OS are extremely limiting and don't support this audio capability, ultimately rendering a broken WordPress experience on these devices.

I hope that answers your question.

I would like to know if this issue has be reconsidered in the last few years.
Honestly, @sushrutpadhye, I think your reply is a bit of a cop out for various reasons:
    1) Video is far more complicated, and the Android WordPress app can post video. Audio is essentially a subset of video.
    2) I think users simply want to be able to attach an audio file to a post (e.g. mp3), or ideally, hit record and record an audio file to post.
    3) The playback of that audio in a post is already dealt with via various plugins that work well on the diversity of android devices.
    4) Other blogging apps, like tumblr can do it, so it is possible.

Personally, I want to use a blogging platform for my 8 year old as a homeschooling digital portfolio. I would prefer to use wordpress so I know it won't disappear one day, but easy (i.e. within the app) to post audio is crucial - videos are too large, and he often only needs to record his voice for reflection etc.

So at this stage, I think my only option is to use another platform like tumblr, and maybe export it to wordpress in the future.
