The CMS Tree View plugin is excellent and I use it all the time. However, the default WordPress behaviour is the problem. If you edit any child node of a private parent the child's parent is immediately set to (no parent) because the dropdown doesn't have it as a valid value.

Sorry, that should have said plugin territory. Except that's wrong too.

It's being worked on, but in the meantime there are plugins.

My +1 for this feature. Seems like a no-brainer, why limit private pages differently than public ones?

I was using a plugin called Simple Members Area and it used a structure of creating a private page and having other private pages as child pages. Had a bunch of client documents linked from one private parent page. Worked great.

Unfortunately "worked" is past tense. Had this working for a client but now can't create child of private page.

Should be able to create a private page and then have additional page(s) from that private page also be private AND once you get access the parent you can navigate to the children. Just makes sense....

As a workaround, you can make your parent page public (or password-protected, if you're worried) for a few moments, then add your sub-pages and make them children to the parent but set them as private. Then, when you're finished adding child pages, set the parent to private and the child pages will remain both private AND child pages of the parent (retaining the correct url, etc.), even though you can no longer select the parent as a parent from the parent list.

Not sure if this makes sense so let me know if you need more explanation and/or steps.

(I wonder if I could possible use the term "parent" more times than I just did...)

yeah, I hope this feature comes in the dashboard soon..
but there are wordpress plugins that can solve this problem.. an example is the link below..

https://wordpress.org/plugins/cms-tree-page-view/

I'm not saying this works well or this is the best.. this is just an example of a plugin that can arrange posts hierarchy for live posts or for drafts.. you can be in control..

hey @Ipstenu (Mika Epstein).. some of my posts in the ideas sections are not being displayed, can you help me find the reason why?? I'll appreciate it. thanks!

No, no one's working on this yet. Please stop making duplicate accounts (seriously, I can see your account back-end info, it's not that hard to sort out who's doing it) and asking the same questions.
