In this week's #ParliamentPeople we chatted to Louise, who's worked with us since February 2017! . 🔹What is your job, and what do you like about working at the #ScottishParliament? . I work as a Travel and Expenses Administrator in the Allowances office. My job is to accurately record and process all types of payments under the Reimbursement of Members’ Expenses Scheme and providing MSPs and their support staff with guidance on the Scheme. Also, I recently joined the Mental Health Network steering group which is one of six Diversity Staff Networks within the Parliament. Our aim is to promote and support good mental health among all staff through raising awareness/peer support. I love that the Parliament is committed to making changes for the better through these networks and I have already seen an immensely positive impact. . 🔹What's one thing people should know about the Parliament? . The first thing that struck me when I first started working here was how friendly and supportive the staff is. The Parliament is easily one of the busiest places I have worked for but everyone takes the time to get to know you and ask how your day is going regardless of how much they have to do. There is a real atmosphere of inclusion and it makes the Parliament a great place to work. . 🔹What's the best thing on your desk? . I was recently given @seemescotland badges at the Mental Health Network survey launch as part of the See Me "Pass the Badge" campaign. The idea is to wear the badge for 24 hours, pass on to someone else and also pass on the fact that that one in four people will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime and of those who do, 9 out of 10 report experiencing stigma and discrimination. It is a great way to open up a conversation about #mentalhealth while also showing support for those affected. I have passed on one of my badges and I have a second one that I wear permanently to show my support for See Me. . The Donald Dewar room was once the bedroom and dressing room of the second Duke of Queensberry! These days it holds the collection of #books and other memorabilia gifted to the #ScottishParliament by the family of Donald Dewar, Scotland's first First Minister who died in October 2000. . The room is intended as a quiet thinking, study and writing space for MSPs, and it has some neat features including an oak table with moveable sections, and artichoke ceiling lights - you can spot one in the reflection in the photo! . I am Gaelic Development Officer. I’ve been here since 2002 and my job is to deliver services in #gaelic including social media, publications, coordinating Gaelic translation and helping to draw up our Gaelic Language Plan. I love the fact that no two days are the same and that I get to meet and interact with a lot of interesting people from all over the world 🌎. I also really enjoy working as a jobshare with my learned colleague and excellent friend Mark Neilly. . 🔹What's one thing people should know about the Parliament? . That you can learn about the Parliament and interact with it in Gaelic! We are on twitter at @ParlAlba and have a range of publications in Gaelic for example. . We’re currently consulting on a new edition of our Gaelic Language Plan so we’d love to hear your views 📢. The consultation is at bit.ly/GaelicPlan and is open until 2 November. . I’m interested in a lot of other minority languages including Kernewek – Cornish – and I picked up this flag when I visited #cornwall a few years ago. I speak some #manx and #irishgaelic too and if I ever get the time, I’d like to have a go at some Cornish! . It's #NationalHoneyWeek and we're celebrating with a brand new range in our gift shop! We may be biased but we think its the bee's knees... . Our new bee-themed range includes tea towels, mugs, gift cards, notepads and more - and they're on sale now! You can snap up any of these gifts along with a jar of our delicious honey, which is selling so quickly we've had to limit to one jar per person. All of these beautiful products were designed by #Edinburgh based designer Jenni Douglas, who was inspired by the bees and hives kept in the gardens of the #ScottishParliament. Thanks to Jenni for her wonderful designs and to @stuarthoodshoney, the family-run Scottish company who have looked after bees in the fields and hills of #EastLothian for more than 60 years! . National Honey Week runs from 23-29th October and is aimed at celebrating the honey crop and recognising the key role of the honey bee to the environment. At the Scottish Parliament we're conscious of our place in the landscape and keen to contribute to Scottish ecology. We have four beehives onsite at the Parliament, which are kept in the Members' Garden with perfect access to the foliage of #HolyroodPark and Arthur's Seat. . This week's #ParliamentArt feature is this unique (and colourful!) @royalmailuk Pride postbox, which will sit in place of our usual postbox for the next two weeks to show our support for LGBT+ rights. 📮 . The Presiding Officer, the Rt. Hon. Ken Macintosh MSP, welcomed the postbox to Parliament yesterday alongside party members and members of SPOut, the Parliament's LGBT+ staff network. It has already visited @ukparliament and @buckinghamroyal as well as featuring in Pride marches in London, Manchester and Glasgow. 🏳️‍🌈 . The Scottish Parliament is dedicated to creating a diverse and inclusive organisation; through our six diversity staff networks we encourage staff to be open and respectful towards one another and to celebrate our diversity. What is your job and what do you like about working at the #ScottishParliament? . I'm Deputy Head of Events and Exhibitions Team - my main role is to manage the annual Festival of Politics and support the Head of Team in delivering the Scottish Parliament's major events and exhibitions. 🖌 . I work with the team to bring in new events and exhibition initiatives as part of the Parliament's public engagement strategy, so everything from working with the @officialsyp and @YoungScot to the @Filmhousecinema to the @edscifest and academic institutions to ensure that everyone across Scotland knows that this is their Parliament. . I love the fact I get to work in one of the most beautiful and exciting architectural buildings in Scotland. Walking through the glass ceiling Garden Lobby every day gives me a real kick! . What's one thing people should know about the Parliament? . It is FREE to come in and visit. We offer free tours - ranging from the regular to art and architecture and some of the most stunning views you will see anywhere in #Edinburgh. . What's the best thing on your desk? . There are leaf shapes abound in the Scottish Parliament, as the architect of the building - Enric Miralles - sought to connect the new Parliament building with the landscape of Scotland itself. . This approach carries through in the shapes and materials employed in the Parliament's construction, with wood, stone and concrete sourced from across Scotland to create a building that evokes leaves and branches reaching across Canongate. 🍃. .
