Adaptive images for responsive design

   I'd love to see adaptive images support out of the box. When looking at adaptive-images.com, this seems such a great technology. Right now I'm using this manually, but I'd be great to be included, so theme developers could easily make the next generation websites: responsive as it should: mobile first.

   This could also be made as a plugin, but come on, everybody nows the future is responsive, the WordPress core should have it.

   The core idea behind adaptive images is to show smaller images (less Kb) to smaller screen sizes (poor internet speeds). With the site mentioned above, you can serve your visitors this great functionality without any hassle.

   This may be a theme request for now... Not everyone would want the overhead. I'd love to see a plugin/theme pick up on this, though, and get some traction!

   I don't want this as a plugin/theme pick up, I already use it internally. It would be great if WordPress had out of the box support for this. No, this is not for anybody, but just giving the possibility to theme authors would boost responsive theme development, a unique case in CMS-world.

   I'd rather see it more like an advanced theme support. Something like this to add in the functions file:

   add_theme_support( 'adaptive_images' );

   This way it's not forced to those who don't want to use it, but it's easy for those who do.

   Edit: after all, it's not that hard: all it needs is a cache directory, a <script> added to the site header hook and a few .htaccess lines.

   The reason I think it's better as theme/plugin for now is that's how most new features get picked up for core usage. it allows the community to vote with their feet and demonstrate that's what they want.

   Adding the .htaccess and script stuff isn't hard, but remember, not everyone uses WP on apache, so you have to account for how this will work on IIS and other non-htaccess using webservers.

   No offence thanushka, but this isn't exactly the way I have it in mind.

   I'm talking about adaptive, not responsive images. When loading images on smaller devices, the big filesize image shouldn't be loaded, but a smaller version (mobile first thinking).

   siteoptimo, any chance of some tips on how to get this to work on wordpress or what your server setup is.

   All I get is broken image icons on my site.

   Server environment;

   Apache 2.2.17-2
   PHP 5.2 FastCGI
   mod_security on

    I think serving adaptive images out of the box is a great idea.
    It is just not right to make a responsive/fluid layout and then send the visitors huge images which are then resized by the browser.

    Whether this should be a core function or a theme thing is a question for more technical people to answer, but there is no question that this is a functionality that users are going to want very soon.
