Yes, I think WP definitely needs to sort out the users/permissions mess asap if it wants to call itself a true CMS. I used to use Joomla and it was fantastic for dealing with users, permissions and organization. All the content had a hierarchy and permissions could be set at any level. For example, you could restrict access to all posts in a category or just one page/post. Each widget could be restricted, like a user menu widget just for people logged in or a widget only admins could see. Or you could make a menu public but restrict individual links for certain user levels, Joomla was fantastic for that solid control over users and content. The only reason I stopped using it was because the plugins were not kept up to date and it was just overall a smaller community.

There was also no confusion between administrator templates(themes) and the frontend theme unlike WordPress where everyone logging in, say to leave a simple comment, has to see the dashboard and toolbar. I can't believe back and front end themes would cross over so oddly in such a popular product. Even this WordPress.org site is hiding the toolbar on us right now, probably using a plugin or custom code just to work around the default.

I have been using User Role Editor, and whilst it goes some way to controlling the role permissions, there are still a number of gaping holes in the system. I run a creative writing workshop site, and whilst I want my workshop authors to be able to freely publish, edit and delete their writing, I don't want them to add - for instance - downloads, events or faqs to the site.

Luckily the events plugin includes a role permissions option, but the other plugins don't. I suppose I could keep on looking for the perfect plugin, but it would certainly be so much easier if the option to control permissions was right inside the core system.

This is one of the biggest drawbacks of WordPress.

User Role management in any CMS shouldn't rely on any plugin.

This should be a core feature.

Hi! I've found this awesome plugin, which may have a partial solution to the problem

http://wordpress.org/plugins/user-role-editor/

They promise:
"Per posts/pages users access management to post/page editing functionality."

They have good rating, too.

I'm going to download and try to play with it.

I concur. In addition to the existing admin options, the ability to show/hide pages and widgets based on user role would go a long way to moving Wordpress away from being "just a blog" to more of a complete CMS solution.

I totally agree... If it is believed that most users dont need an in-built user role manager then in real sense there is no point in having various user roles at all. But I think it is very necessary to provide a user role manager using which accessibility of posts, pages and various actions like visibility, add, edit, delete, etc can be managed for various user roles and also with this a role selection should be given on the registration page in frontend (a drop down list will be preferable for this).

Agreed @mahalie. A real CMS would have a more sophisticated role management paradigm, allowing for cascading permissions.

@averyfisher and @MokiEla: please vote.
