I completely agree with Jess Friedman. I use wordpress for most of my website and i think that it's a great idea and helpfull.

No users will have worries in updating their themes about losing the widgets they have set for.

That's already been implemented.

Agreed. Plus, widgets (especially text widgets) should look like any other WordPress post. The visual editor should be available so "real users" (who we show where the widgets are) don't have to understand all that HTML we have to put in to make the contents look good. Widgets should be visual, support short codes, allow images, etc.

I proposed a Google Summer of Code project addressing this problem. It does go a different way, but solves the same thing.

It is called "Widget Collections" and you can read the whole thing at my blog yrnxt.com/~121

Maybe, if you give some feedback and the project gets approved for GSOC, you can use this functionality by the end of October!

This is a wonderful idea, I completely agree, because of the pain when you have to remember and remake the widgets in a new theme. This idea, if implemented saves this work. Especially very good for someone who keeps on changing themes. This is a functionality that will make WordPress more dynamic.

I agree with Jesse.. it would be much easier if we can work on side bars as we work on menus... but i think that widgets should work differently than side bars and menus ...

I just read your post @Jessie and you have some valid points but at the same time I think that it would be very confusing for the users if widget and sidebars would work exactly like menus. Something should definitely be done with widgets and you are definitely on to something here but your idea in my opinion should be modified a little.
