Wouldn;t this be theme or plugin territory though?

You can alreayd do this if you have a simple page template that just has another widgetized area instead of the content.

Or.

The plugin or widget itself could have a shortcode ability added to it.

I know exactly what you mean! there's a ton of plugins etc. that are created as widgets already... I don't have room nor do I want all of them in my sidebar(s)...
Let us stick the widget onto a page or into a post.. Personally I'd stick them on a page.. for instance.. movie reviews (hope flixster gets one soon!) book reviews (make an amazon affiliate widget) all kinds of stuff.

Ditto!
If you have used http://www.blogger.com/ at least once, you know what I mean. If not, let you try, it takes just half minute (go under "template" and then click on "post").

If you don't want to try, I'll explain here :-)
With widgets (see http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/WordPress_Widgets) you can easily manage what you like to put on your sidebar, without dealing with PHP. The same should apply to the post (for example where and how you would like to show the date, the time, the category, etc)
