Making a difference
July 30, 2014 by Jill Walker No Comments
I’m not a morning person so, for me, earlier isn’t always better. However, one thing that makes it easier to get out of bed, is the hope/thought that you might just make a difference.
It’s sometimes difficult to remember when I’m annoyed at the IT systems in the office, or fed-up waiting for people to get back to me. But then something happens that reminds me why I love my job at the Scottish Government. Today is one of those days.
The Detect Cancer Early programme has been running for over two years now, trying to increase the number of people diagnosed at the earliest stage of Scotland’s most common cancers – bowel, lung and breast.
Yesterday, figures were released showing that 24.3% of all breast, lung and bowel cancers diagnosed in 2012 and 2013 were detected at stage one (the earliest possible stage). This is an increase of 4.7% on the previous two years.
This brought a smile to all our faces – we know there’s more work to be done but we’re moving in the right direction. So, I’ll be getting up early tomorrow…
