What is CE Marking?

CE Marking of structural steelwork is a declaration by you, the manufacturer, that your product meets certain public safety requirements.

The public safety requirements are a set of essential characteristics that each product must satisfy and these characteristics are given in the product’s harmonised standard.

Since 1 July 2014, the Construction Products Regulation has made CE Marking mandatory in the UK and Republic of Ireland, for all construction products that are permanently incorporated in to building or civil engineering works and are covered by either a harmonised standard or a European Technical Assessment that is in force.

CE Marking is regulated by criminal law and the penalties for not CE Marking or incorrect CE Marking, are a fine, imprisonment or both.

The greatest impact however could be on your business, which could lose business opportunities and be forced to recall non-complying products already on the market.

How do I become qualified for CE Marking?

  • Know the requirements of the standards applicable to your products
  • Use the specified test methods to ensure conformity with those requirements
  • Implement a quality control system that is preferably compliant with BS EN ISO 9001 in line with the Euro Codes BS EN 1090-1 and BS EN 1090-2
  • Have a welding quality management system in line with the appropriate part of BS EN ISO 3834 in place
  • Employ or have access to a responsible welding coordinator in accordance with BS EN ISO 3834 to control their welding quality management system
  • Mark your products in the specified way using a suitable classification and designation system.

Once you have the above in place you can become certified by an approved body.
