Stopover between Inverness and Lakes District

  I'd vote for Aberfoyle or Balloch (links to VisitScotland destination pages). Not a big detour and roughly half way, the former will give you a night next to Loch Lomond and the latter would have you stay near dense Trossachs forest.

  One thing - @Horizons has these the wrong way round, it's Balloch for Loch Lomond and Aberfoyle for the Trossachs.

  Maybe Perth would be more suitable/practical as you will be headed in this direction anyway. There are plenty of smaller villages close by (and off the A9) that would be good to stop off at. 
  
  I have had friends who stayed at The Angler's Inn  not far from Perth and they loved it.

  Anything in the Cairngorms is fantastic! I recently stayed at The Lazy Duck in Nethy Bridge and it was stunning.

  Nethy Bridge, by the way @Dimelv, is near Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey.

  Thanks for the good ideas folks. Aberfoyle appeals to me. Someone has suggested Inveraray. Is there anyone out there who can tell me if this stopover is a good option? ps. I'm from Australia and this is my first time in the UK.

  @Dimelv Inveraray is a beautiful stop but definitely a bigger detour than pretty much any suggestion here. If you give us some specifics of what you're looking for, we can give you targeted suggestions (like I did recently on this other thread)
