  Hey Dan, my recommendation for you would be to hire a car if you can drive unless you plan to visit a number of distilleries for tastings. I've done all my Scotland travel by public transport as I can't drive yet but I miss the flexibility of stopping anywhere I like to take in the views. That, for me, is a significant part of the Scotland travel experience.
  
  For travel around Scotland by public transport, @spoots has created a comprehensive list of all options available that connect all the spots you're interested in. My personal recommendation would be Glasgow - Oban by train, Oban - Skye by buses (you'll have to leave early), Skye - Inverness by bus to Kyle followed by the Kyle line train and Inverness to Stirling by train.
