After an incredibly busy summer spending quite a bit
of time away from Scotland, we headed off to Mountview Lochinver sat on the
shores of Lochinver and surrounded by some of the most impressive landscapes
and geology in Scotland. Mountview is located in Baddidarach, Assynt looking out to the impressive peaks of
Canisp and Suilven in the distance.

There are many different accommodations to choose
from all unique in their own character and charm. There is a mega pod, two log
cabins varying in sizes and a converted croft house. We stayed in Muir-Lan Log Cabin, Muir-lan is Gaelic for high tide and is uniquely sat right on the
water's edge. There was one double bedroom, one twin bedded bedroom, a fully
fitted kitchen with all modern appliances, a very comfortable sitting room, a
luxury bathroom and even a very well placed jacuzzi sat right out on the
balcony overlooking the views of the loch: this was an added bonus!

The
accommodation is a perfect spot for exploring the direct surroundings and a
stone’s throw away from the scenic route around to Achmelvich and further
north. This is an area of Scotland that I've not spent enough time in exploring
so I was really keen to actually spend a good few days in this location and
slow down a bit!

Our
initial plan for the trip was to do some hiking and head up to a few of the
peaks in the surrounding the area; (the cabin is perfectly situated close to
some of the most unique interesting peaks in Scotland yet the forecast was
misty so we decided to have more of a slow adventure, make the most of the
cabin and dedicate our time to exploring the surrounding area of Assynt and the
scenic route North instead. We spent the days we had at the Cabin fully
relaxing and immersing ourselves in the chilled out atmosphere of the place; (something
we don’t make much time for normally) whilst watching the surrounding wildlife (there
have been otters spotted on the shoreline right next to the cabin) and a
lot of time in the hot tub (this is a luxury we don’t get too often either!)

On
our last day having spent the weekend slowing down, driving around the
coastline and relaxing, we awoke to clear blue skies where we were truly able
to appreciate the majestic location of this cabin. The towering peaks rose in
the distance and it was very obvious why the cabin has been placed where it is. The
best part about staying in the Muir-Lan Log Cabin? Walking back home to the
cabin after dinner along the shore to slip straight into the jacuzzi to have an
evening beneath the stars, an absolute must and an evening that I’ll not be
forgetting anytime soon!

I would highly recommend
this place, not only for the ideal location for exploring the surrounding areas
of Assynt but also for spotting wildlife and slowing down to appreciate the
wonderful details of this thoughtfully built Cabin whilst being immersed in its
beauty and homely charm. I’m already looking forward to going back!

My wife, daughter and myself, took a holiday in Scotland this year for the very first time. We were captivated. So we shall be back in September 18 again for two weeks. This year we rented a lovely house in Stronchreggan on the western shore of Loch Linnhe. We toured much of the area around the loch and ventured to Oban, Mull, Mallaig, Glenfinnan, Fort William and the southern part of the Great Glen. In 18 we would like to go a little further north and find somewhere that is equidistant between Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness as we would like to visit Skye, Applecross and Culloden, etc. Ideally a two bedroom cottage with preferred shower facility. if anyone could offer suggestions it would be appreciated.

I ventured off to the Isle of Mull having not been on the Island for a few years, eager to see the startling landscape once again and variations of geology that Mull is home to. I was also even more excited to stay with Treshnish and Haunn Cottages located right on an incredible coastal farm with panoramic views over to the Isle of Coll and the Treshnish Isles. It's even close to Calgary beach with many hiking routes surrounding the area so it seemed like a perfect base for me to relax, be inspired but also to see many varied landscapes.

I was only on the Island for three days but I sure made the most of it. When I go back, (if is not an option) I definitely intend to just stay at Treshnish point from the cottage and wander around that area as there is so much beauty and variation in the landscape. I would recommend to really take in that area and slow down with the remarkable location of the cottages. However, because I only had a few days I was eager to get out and about and see more of Mull as it has been way too long since my last visit.

The background of the farm is a very interesting one: There are 8 cottages, 4 at Treshnish, 4 at Haunn but all with simply spectacular views to the vast expanse of sky and sea around the coastline. The property was one that intrigued me in general because of the sustainability and environmentally friendly ethos it promotes. It has been integral to the owners to preserve the quality of it being untouched. Each building has been carefully decorated to a high yet homely standard, many antiquities that fit the purpose of the location. Modern and homely, whilst preserving the natural quality of the cottages as they always were; slotted perfectly into the landscape, years’ worth of history and tales within the walls. They do not impose, they simply blend beautifully into the location, a shelter against (I'm sure some pretty wild elements) however I was fortunate enough on my stay to have 2 days of sunshine and a day of hail, high winds then sunshine again!

The farm also provides many wonderful opportunities for walking and exploring the varied landscape whilst having idyllic beaches nearby including the infamous Calgary Bay! The cottages are even located within the National Scenic Area of North West Mull, a perfect base from which to choose to enjoy the wildlife, (I saw a few golden eagles) walking and exploring lots! There are nearly 4 miles of dramatic coastline to explore – offering wonderful sea and island views. Look for the Treshnish Islands, Ulva, Gometra, Iona, Coll, Tiree, Rum, Eigg, Muck and Skye. The highest ‘hill’ on the farm is Cruachan Treshnish so it is the best hill to climb to catch the loveliest views. My home for the three days was the Shieling, to be honest I would have been happy in any one of the wonderful properties but this was one perfect for just me, cosy, homely and a quiet secluded spot where I could to and process all the inspiration I had loaded up on from the day!

Here’s some more really interesting history about the place:About Treshnish.

It's always important to make the most of the location where you're staying so I set off for a big hike around the farm. I spent a good while seeing the full immensity of the farm and visiting a viking burial site, a ruined township and many many sheep all roaming around on the hillside. It also was a great opportunity to see the Haunn Cottages, equally as stunning as the other cottages but that extra bit remote! I'll let the photos do the talking for my walk around the area, it truly is an inspiring place.

If you would like to follow more of what Treshnish and Haunn Cottages get up to follow them on their social media which captures life on the farm and living in a remote yet scenic area perfectly and of course if you’d like to book a stay here is the website once again with all information!

Instagram

Facebook

Twitter

Thank you once again to the wonderful and inspiring Carolyn and Somerset at Treshnish, I’m looking forward to coming back already!
Hi lovely people!
Does anyone here has any experience of booking cottages trough homeaway.co.uk website? We are trying to find accommodation for 6 nights in May on Isle of Skye, and we tried to use airbnb - but no one is ever even replying to our booking requests and website just cancels our payments after 24hrs and all major well known websites are sold out for Skye (at least places we could afford to rent).
After more research we came across homeaway.co.uk, where we found lots of nice looking cottages, but the website itself has quite bad reviews from users - people mainly complain on lack of help from them in case of cancellations or if property in the real life is not as described on the website. Just wondering if someone here has any experience with them?

Or maybe someone knows where we could find nice place to stay for 6 nights (20.05.18-26.05.18), two non-smoking adults (couple), close-ish to civilization (village shop, pub, petrol station, town within 10-20 mins drive), not too far North (we will be travelling from Cambridgeshire), with kitchen, bathroom, comfortable bed and possibly washing machine and tumble dryer. Costing no more than £650 for the whole stay.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Ela

I will be making my first trip to Scotland this year. Our family left Scotland in the 1850's and emigrated to Canada, then to America. I have records of McKenzies, McLeods, Kerrs and McKinnons in Assynt, Lochinvar, Stoer and Culkein. I would like to know about accommodations and what to see. I would like to meet any relations who may still live there, if they can put up with my music.

Although I generally stay at a hotel, guest house, B&B or Inn when I'm travelling I've had a couple of recent excellent experiences of self-catering in the Hebrides.

On the Isle of Harris I stayed at a dog friendly self-catering cottage owned by the wonderful Hotel Hebrides in Tarbert. Perfectly located for a spending spree at the Harris Tweed shop. Luskentyre Beach was a short car journey away and we spent blissful mornings walking our dog there. Tarbert has a small local store which is akin to a tardis. It sells everything you'll need for a self catering break. If you're not inclined to cook there are several good places to eat in the village. Our accommodation was perfect as it came with all bed linen, towels, cleaning products and useful things like sugar, tea and coffee. This saved having to overload the car. I'd definitely recommend this accommodation and wouldn't hesitate to revisit it again.

http://www.hotel-hebrides.com/

My other recent experience of self catering was at Calgary Bay on the Isle of Mull. Mull is my absolute favourite place in Scotland. I first saw Calgary Bay in my early teens and was blown away. It's stunning. Our accommodation here also came with towels and linen. There's a store nearby in the village of Dervaig for provisions. This accommodation has a tea room/gallery attached which is great for a nice hot coffee or hearty soup after a bracing walk on the beach. You'll also find a lovely Art in Nature walk here. It's a woodland walk with lots of quirky installations. The walk leads down to Calgary Bay. My daughter loved it. Again I'd thoroughly recommend this accommodation. What's good about it too is they have a range of different sized accomodation, starting from a studio upwards.

http://www.calgary.co.uk/

I'm happy to help with any questions you may have about visiting Mull, Harris or travelling in general with dogs or children.

Sam
