The First Minister Alex Salmond has saluted the Scottish medallists who have kick started Team Scotland’s Commonwealth Games.

A fantastic 10 medals have been won, including new Games Records in the pool for swimmers Hannah Miley and Ross Murdoch. Scotland sit third in the medal table.

Congratulating all Team Scotland medal winners on the first day of the 2014 Commonwealth Games Mr Salmond said:

“This has been a great day for the Games, with big crowds, excellent performances and truly memorable displays of Glaswegian hospitality.

“Aileen McGlynn and Louise Haston did fantastically well to kick-start Team Scotland’s medal tally with their para-cycling Silver in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

"The Gold wins of sisters Kimberley and Louise Renicks in judo, and the Games Records achieved by Hannah Miley and Ross Murdoch in the pool provided another huge boost to the team. Scotland’s own Games ambassador Michael Jamieson also took home Silver in the pool, proving a tremendous end in Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

“The judo team carried on with their great start with a Silver from Stephanie Inglis, and John Buchanan, James Millar and Connie Ramsay, all achieving Bronze on home soil.

“I’d like to also extend my congratulations to Team England who currently lead the medal table with six Golds.

“Many congratulations to everyone who took home a medal today. Each athlete displayed incredible physical prowess and depths of mental fortitude. Watching the finals you could see the clear determination in each of our winners. These medal wins will hopefully be followed by many more for Team Scotland.”
