Visiting Glasgow to Isle of Islay
I will be in Glasgow June 10 for a few nights then a circuitous trip to Isle of Islay and back. I think I may rent a vehicle.
Suggestions on travel and places to see.

- Walk the coastal path from Ardbeg - Lagavulin - Laphroid if the weather's nice
- Base yourself in Bowmore as its the most central public transport hub for the day or two spent sampling whisky. Its quite possible to see multiple distilleries using buses in a single day but you need to return by 6 PM. Basing yourself at Bowmore keeps the party going
- Visit the Machir bay, its a very pretty beach. Also visit Portnahaven for beautiful coastal views.
- Hop on to the nearby Isle of Jura, its biggest standing stone is really wild & unique plus lots of hiking around.
- One thing I missed out on was a boat trip near the Corryvreckan whirlpool. I'll have to return for what I think may be a big adventure.
May I also suggest going in via the normal route (Kennacraig ferry terminal via Argyll forest) and coming back either via Arran (Islay - Kennacraig ferry - Claonaig ferry - Lochranza, I loved this detour) or Oban (wednesday ferry). Hope this helps.
Best of Scotland in 1 week itinerary (fully by public transport)
My Scotland travels (includes Edinburgh, Skye, Harris, Mull, Arran, Orkney, Loch Lomond, Islay, Oban, Speyside fest)
Booking on a tour or using public transport to get north would probably be a good way forward, unless you have a specific desire to drive
Whisky, Castles and Food a speciality.
