Foggieton

Find your path at Foggieton

Foggieton's two waymarked trails take you through some of the oldest as well as the youngest trees in the wood. Crane your neck at the magnificent beech trees towering over the car park (planted in the 1860s) and then wander like a giant amongst the fresh young growth of Foggieton's newest woodland (planted in the 2010s).

A new upgraded path now links Foggieton Woods to Cults. The path will be open to all users once it has settled, but please refrain from taking horses on the path at present.

Warblers' Trail

Watch for warblers flitting among the young trees on this short winding trail.

Firm, largely smooth gravel surface throughout. Generally flat with some short moderate ramps. Some patches may be slightly muddy.

Cycling trails


Mountain biking trails


Walkers and joggers of all ages love Foggieton for its small natural paths and varied woodland. Occasional orienteering events are organised here in summertime by Grampian Orienteers.

Cyclists will find a designated cycle trail in Kirkhill forest a few miles away, and a variety of more suitable trails in Countesswells forest, right next door.

Foggieton wood was planted on agricultural land which was last worked in the 19th century. Its name means 'messy farm' and hidden clues to its farming past can still be seen in the wood.

There is a good example of rig and furrow cultivation under the beech trees in the car park. The rig was a raised ridge where the crops were planted, the furrow a hollow into which excess water could drain. This type of cultivation was common in North East farms in the 1700s and 1800s.

How to get here

From Aberdeen on the A93, turn right (north) at the Bieldside junction beside the church. Continue on for 1¼ miles (2 km) and the forest car park will be on your right.

From Aberdeen on the A944 turn left (south) at the Kingswells roundabout, follow the unclassified road until a T-junction. Turn right, then first left. The forest car park will be on your left, about 2 miles / 3 km from the roundabout.
