The perfect riverside stop-off

Strone Hill nestles between the river and the Tyndrum-Oban road. It's a good place to break up a journey and enjoy fresh woodland air as well as enjoy the gorgeous River Lochy falls.

The trees here are mainly oak, birch and rowan, and are full of brilliant colour in autumn and spring. We've been taking out the non-native conifers and encouraging wildlife, so you'll see different birds and animals every time you come.

This delightful short trail is great if you have limited time. It takes you through beautiful mature oak woodland to a viewpoint over the River Lochy falls. On rainy days you'll hear the roar of the waterfall as you approach.

An Darach Ruadh Trail

The ‘red oak trail’ follows the River Lochy down through some beautiful native oak woodland. Can you find the 'aerial tree'?

A watering hole for weary cattle

Strone Hill is a natural resting place for travellers. In the past drovers watered their cattle here on the long walk to markets in the south. Today it's a peaceful spot to walk your dog and picnic by the river. There are good views to Ben Cruachan from the car park and an impressive viewpoint over the River Lochy falls.

How to get here

From Tyndrum, head towards Oban on the A85 for 8¾ miles (14km) and you'll see Strone Hill car park signposted on your left.

From Dalmally, take the A85 east towards Tyndrum and climb steadily for 3 miles (4.8 km). The car park is signposted on your right.

There are more scenic picnic sites and a challenging cycle route just around the corner in gentle Glen Orchy. On the way to Oban, Fearnoch has forest walks and a cycle route, and the delightful Atlantic oakwoods of Glen Nant National Nature Reserve. Stop at one of the informal picnic sites along the western shore of Loch Awe, with great family trails at Barnaline and Cruachan.
