Amaze yourself at Achnashellach

A short walk through the forest leads to classic routes to the Munros of Beinn Liath Mhor (the big grey hill) and Sgurr Ruadh (the red peak). Fuar Tholl (the cold hole) is a popular climbing site that's just below 3,000 feet – it's also called 'Wellington's Nose' because of its shape.

If you don't feel like a high-level walk, there's a circuit around Easan Dorcha (the dark waterfall) that passes waterfalls, pine forest and superb views of Strathcarron.

The peaks around Achnashellach are popular for winter climbing as well as walking, and there's a right of way through the Coulin pass all the way to Glen Torridon. You'll find detailed route descriptions at Walkhighlands and Munromagic: search for 'Achnashellach'.

There are more options for exploring this dramatic glen at Craig, just 2¼ miles (3.7 km) along the road. To the north, Slattadale and Victoria Falls have sheltered trails overlooking beautiful Loch Maree.
