Rosehall

Rouse your senses at Rosehall

Rosehall is a welcoming forest with a network of interesting trails and an impressive log cabin created by the community. It's on the site of a walled deer park, where Rosehall estate once kept herds of fallow and sika deer. Descendants of the sika still browse in the woods, and the old carriage routes have found a new use as trails; ideal for walking and cycling.

Pine Marten Trail

A peaceful walk through lush pine woods to the Allt a Chaorainn burn. Some fine views over Strath Oykel.

Uneven gravel and grassy surface. Long moderate slopes for 400m with some steeper sections. Includes two wide gates and a bridge. Some sections may be muddy.

Explore on two wheels

Rosehall has an extensive network of paths and forest roads which are great for cycling. Pick up a trail map at the log cabin.

Speedy building

The sturdy log cabin at the start of the trails was built by community volunteers in 2004. This hardworking team used timber from the forest and raised the cabin walls in only ten days! Today it's an education centre and a welcome shelter for visitors. Have a look inside to discover some fascinating information on Rosehall and its wildlife.

The Rosehall community also created the wonderful network of trails here. There's the main waymarked route (the Pine Marten Trail) as well as a number of informal longer trails, good for exploring by bike or on foot. Watch out for colourful images of birds and animals in the trees: local schoolchildren drew the pictures and wrote the cheery verses that go with them.

Rosehall is a working forest, so there are areas which have been felled recently and others which are newly-planted. Growing our own timber supply takes many decades. Here in Rosehall you can see the whole production cycle in action – from tiny new saplings on the hillside to strong, useful logs in the cabin.

How to get here

From Bonar Bridge take the A836 north west, turning left onto the A837 towards Lochinver after 4 miles (6.4 km). Follow this road for 7 ¾ miles (12.4 km) until you see the forest entrance on your right.

From Lairg follow the A839 south west for just under 8 miles (12.8 km) and then turn right onto the A837 towards Rosehall village. After ¼ mile (400 metres) you'll see the forest entrance on your right.

The car park is beside the log cabin at grid reference NC 479 091.

Gorgeous Raven's Rock is 1 ¾ miles (2.8 km) away and well worth a visit, while gentle family trails and leaping salmon make Falls of Shin a popular stop during the summer months. If you're a mountain biker with energy to spare, head for Balblair near Bonar Bridge. For quiet woodland strolls choose Camore or Skelbo near Dornoch.
