Enjoy superb coastal and mountain views from two contrasting forest trails

Pick your path at North Sannox

This intriguing coastal forest has two very different trails to explore. You can wander through woodland next to the shore on an easy level track looking out towards Bute, or climb high through the trees to see stunning views over the Sleeping Warrior and the north end of Arran.

Fallen Rocks Coastal Trail

A gentle stroll along the wooded shore of the Firth of Clyde to these giant boulders, where you can look for seabirds and porpoises.

Generally flat and wide loose gravel track. Short section to the rocks is firm but narrow, with some short fairly steep slopes and a narrow gate.

A living coast

This is a great place to spot wildlife. Dolphins and porpoises are sometimes seen off the coast, gannets dive near the Fallen Rocks and red deer graze on the open hills.

The secrets of Sannox

Hidden in the forest are three intriguing white-painted masts. Seen from the sea, they mark a maritime course of two continuous miles and they were once used by the Admiralty and Clyde shipbuilders to test the speed of new ships. There have been measured mile posts in Sannox since 1928, but now that we have modern technologies like GPS the beacons are becoming redundant.

There's also a chambered cairn next to the public toilets and remains of a shieling (summer shelter) hidden in the trees.

How to get here

Travel by ferry from Ardrossan in North Ayrshire to Brodick.

From Brodick take the A841 north to Sannox. About a mile (1.6 km) beyond the village, turn right onto a minor road signposted to the Fallen Rocks. The car park is at the end of this road, at grid reference NS 015 466.
