Relax in Auchenshuggle

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city in this peaceful wood in Tollcross. It’s ideal for a gentle stroll with the family, a walk with your dog or a picnic in the dappled shade beneath the trees. There’s wildlife here too – keep an eye out for deer or a shy fox and listen for woodland birds amongst the leaves of the ash and birch trees. Look carefully in late spring and you might even spot a few orchids.

The main path through the wood is about a mile (1.5km) long, and is wide, firm and fairly level – ideal for buggies.

Find places to eat and drink and toilets across the road at the eastern end of the woods, where there’s a hotel and food outlets. Head into nearby Tollcross for more shops, cafés and restaurants.

The end of the road?

Auchenshuggle gets its unusual name from the Gaelic Achadh an t-Seagail, the ‘rye field’, reminding us of its distant agricultural past. However, it’s probably most famous as the eastern terminus of the city’s Number 9 tram service, which ran until the 1960s. It was often said that the Glasgow Corporation Transport Department made up Auchenshuggle’s intriguing name simply to encourage more people to visit it by tram.

Commonwealth Woods

Auchenshuggle was one of fourteen Commonwealth Woods, designated as part of the legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which provide outdoor spaces for you to enjoy free events and activities, get active or just go for a walk in the fresh air. The network of green spaces around the city includes a mix of well-established and newly-planted woods, and a new riverside park created out of derelict land opposite the Commonwealth Games athletes’ village.

How to get here

Auchenshuggle Wood lies beside the A74 London Road near Tollcross in the east end of Glasgow, just off Junction 2a of the M74.

The main entrance is beside the A74 opposite Tollcross Industrial Estate, at grid reference NS 640 626. There is no car park for the wood itself, but you can park in the streets nearby.

Old Mine Nature Park at Bellshill, another Commonwealth Wood, is fast growing into a lovely woodland as nature reclaims this old industrial site. Other places you might like to visit nearby include the Clyde Walkway along the city’s great river, or lovely Tollcross Park, famed for its roses and Winter Gardens.
