Spread your wings at Beinn Lora

It’s well worth the climb up the hill from the foot of Beinn Lora for a stunning panorama of coast, islands and mountains. Picnic tables at wonderful vantage points give you a chance to catch your breath and take in the scenery, and the Eagle’s Eyrie viewpoint is an ideal photo opportunity.

These trails are popular with local hill runners looking for a strenuous workout. They also provide access to the hill path to the steep grassy summit of Beinn Lora.

Find everything you need

There’s a small shop, a petrol station and a seasonal café in Benderloch. You’ll also find parking and plenty of places to eat, drink and shop in nearby Oban.

Walking trails

Coastal Climb Trail

A short pull up the steep craggy hillside above Benderloch yields some great sea views across Tralee Bay and the Lynn of Lorn. 

Wide, firm but uneven gravel and earth surface. Long steep slopes with some loose sections.

Eagle’s Eyrie Trail

Feel on top of the world at the breath-taking bird’s eye viewpoint on this steep but spectacular trail on the slopes of Beinn Lora.

Long steep slopes for 500m. Wide, firm gravel and stone surface with some uneven and loose sections.

The breath-taking view from the Eyrie takes in Mull, the Lyne of Lorne, Lismore, the Ardnamurchan peninsula and the hills north towards Appin. Higher still, at the forest edge, you’ll also see the summit of Beinn Lora across the open hill.

Hill path to Beinn Lora

The blue Eagle’s Eyrie trail is also the start of the hill path to Beinn Lora, a round trip of about 3¾ miles (6 kms). The summit isn’t very high – just 1,010 feet (308m) – but the views over the coast and islands, and back down Loch Etive to the Ben Cruachan range, are breath-taking.

However, this is a strenuous route with rough and boggy sections on the high ground, suitable for fit and experienced walkers. The route is not signposted, so you need to take a map and compass with you. Remember that even in summer the weather can change very quickly here, so be prepared.

Beinn Lora car park on the A828 Oban to Ballachulish road. You’ll find the car park next to a petrol station in the centre of the village, at grid reference NM 905 380.

Public transport

Regular buses between Oban and Fort William stop in Benderloch. They also stop at Connel, which is the nearest railway station. Find details at Traveline Scotland.

Nearby places

While you are in Benderloch, head down to the sweeping sands of Tralee Beach. Stroll beside the sea for stunning views down Ardmucknish Bay to the Lynn of Lorn and the islands of Kerrera and Mull.

Travel just a few miles north on the A828 to reach the soaring woods of Sutherland’s Grove. Enjoy an easy stroll or a picnic beneath towering Douglas firs or walk up the dramatic rocky gorge to reach a tranquil reservoir.
