Get to know Glashan

Kilmichael Forest swathes the hills in green right around Loch Glashan reservoir. Take the Glashan Burn trail through broadleaved woods – a riot of colour in autumn – to reach the dam and reservoir. For the more adventurous, there’s a network of forest roads and paths around the loch shore, suitable for walking and cycling.

Glashan Burn Trail

Circle through pleasant broadleaved woodland around Glashan Burn at the foot of the reservoir’s dam.

Mostly narrow stony path with a stretch on forest road. Long gentle slopes with some short steeper sections.

Longer routes and wildlife watching at Glashan

The short waymarked trail will give you a taste of the woods and reservoir. Venture further afield on the forest roads for lovely hill and loch views and to find several wildlife havens.

Find the Add Ponds on the far side of the reservoir, a great place to see many different species of dragonfly and damselfly, as well as lots of other water insects. Be aware that a full circuit of the reservoir is more than 10 miles (16km), so make sure you are well prepared!

Permits are available from local hotels and tackle shops for fishing on Loch Glashan and other lochs in Kilmichael.

Kilmichael Forest

Glashan is part of Kilmichael Forest, which stretches between Lochgilphead and Minard. This is a busy working forest, producing many thousand tonnes of timber each year, much of which is used to make paper. There are plenty of peaceful places in this large forest for taking in the views, looking out for wildlife or enjoying trails on foot, bike or horse-back.

How to get here

Glashan is off the A83 between Lochgair and Minard, west of Loch Fyne. From Lochgilphead, take the A83 to Lochgair. Look for the turning signposted ‘Glashan Burn’, on the left about 200 yards (200 metres) after Lochgair Power Station.

From Inverary, take the A83 towards Lochgair. The Glashan Burn turning is about 7 miles (11km) after Minard.

Turn off the A83 and follow the forest road for about ½ mile (1km) to reach the car park, at grid reference NR 923 922.

There are regular buses between Glasgow and Campbeltown via Lochgilphead that stop at Lochgair. Find details at Traveline Scotland.

Nearby places

Just on the other side of the A83 here is Ardcastle, a lovely lochside forest with trails down to the pebbly beach and more great views over Loch Fyne.
