A ferry carried passengers across Loch Fyne from the quay at West Otter Ferry until 1948. Spot yellow iris and darting dragonflies as the path snakes across a stretch of wildlife-friendly bog, and watch out for ducks, geese and even the occasional otter by the loch’s edge.

The Otter Ferry

For nearly 200 years a ferry operated between Port Ann and Otter Ferry, on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne. The service was an important shortcut to the long road journey around the top of the loch and ran until 1948. You can still see the West Otter Ferry quay and find traces of the ferryman’s cottage.

Kilmichael Forest

Port Ann is part of Kilmichael Forest, which stretches between Lochgilphead and Minard. This is a busy working forest, producing many thousand tonnes of timber each year, much of which is used to make paper. There are plenty of peaceful places in this large forest for taking in the views, looking out for wildlife or enjoying trails on foot, bike or horse-back.

Port Ann is about 4½ miles (7km) east of Lochgilphead on the A83.
Look for the car park opposite the entrance to Port Ann village, at grid reference NR 906 867.

Head a few miles farther north along the A83 to find Ardcastle, another lovely lochside forest with trails down to a pebbled beach and more great views over Loch Fyne. Just opposite is Glashan forest and reservoir, with scenic woodland and waterside trails, as well as a challenging cycle route around Loch Glashan.
