Step into Scallastle
Scallastle will give you a taste of Mull’s wild side as soon as you’ve got off the ferry in Craignure. There are superb views over the Sound of Mull and inland to the island’s hilly core, as well as a dramatic river. It’s well worth a visit if it’s been raining to see the rushing water.
This is one of many places where we’re restoring native woodland. As the forest regenerates, the birch and oak trees are particularly good for wildlife.

Walking trails
Scallastle River Trail
Follow the gentler trail to the tumbling Scallastle River, or complete the steep loop up to a great viewpoint looking across to the rugged peak of Dun da Gaoithe.
Long steep slopes. Wide, uneven gravel and grassy surface. Includes rough and loose rocky section, and areas that may be muddy. Two bridges.

How to get here
From Craignure, follow the A849 north towards Salen. The forest entrance is less than ½ mile (800 metres) from the ferry terminal, almost opposite the entrance to the Isle of Mull Hotel. The car park is at grid reference NM 712 375.
