Isle of Mull and Isle of Iona in 1 day?

Planning first trip to Scotland in April 2018 for 14 days. Trying not to cram too much into the trip so we're running around with our hair on fire. The question is, if we're going to be based in Fort William for a couple days will it be possible to drive down to Oban, take a ferry over to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, tour the Tobermory Distillery, check out the town, grab lunch, drive around the island for a bit, take a ferry over to Iona and check that out for a bit, then take the ferry back to Mull, and another ferry back to the mainland in order to get back to Fort William in time for dinner? I tend to think adding Iona to that day will be too much, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's been there.

The Isle of Mull is HUGE. You would have to go in one direction from the ferry to get to Tobermory and then in the opposite direction and an additional 40 miles from the ferry to get to Iona. My suggestion would be skip Tobermory and go straight to Iona.5 -

@shawes86 I visit Mull & Iona 2 or 3 times a year and adore both. There are now day tours running from Oban that will take you to Mull, Iona & Staffa in a day. A great way to get a taster. Personally I'd try to spend a couple of days if you can. Mull & Iona are both magical and you'll never regret lingering a little longer. I'd do an Iona day and climb Dun I for wonderful views then visit the abbey & nunnery. On Mull I'd visit Tobermory as is as pretty as a picture. Scotland's prettiest village in my opinion. You could also visit Dervaig & the gorgeous beach at Calgary Bay.I'm a Scottish travel blogger and freelance writer with an extensive knowledge of travelling in Scotland. It is about 2.5 hours drive (including the Ferry) from Fort William to Tobermory. That is 5 hours driving alone in one day, some of which is on sign track roads which can take a lot longer! So you'd need a full day to visit in my opinion.
Instead suggest doing the following trip from Fort William -
1st day - leave Fort William to visit Glenfinnan - and then drive down through Ardnamurchan and the catch the ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory for dinner. Stay in Tobermory .
2nd day - In the morning visit the distillery and then over to Calgary Bay before catching the ferry back to Oban from Craignure. Make sure you book this ferry!

IMO, Iona is a more interesting destination than Tobermory. But visiting both is best.5
