Mallaig to Fort William suggestion
Looking at taking the Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig but had considered an alternate way of travel for the return in order to see some of the sites along the roadway. Are there bus routes that could accommodate this idea?

There is a bus service in that region but it is not very frequent and there are very few places it will take you that the train cannot. The company is called Shiel Buses and I must say their fleet is modern & comfortable (Timetables: http://www.shielbuses.co.uk/timetables).
There are also regular ScotRail trains that run between Mallaig & Fort William. My recommendation would be to use both timetables to see how to maximize sightseeing though I doubt you'll be able to pick off more than 1 or 2 places. But they will be worth it! Sharing a picture taken at Arisaig where I camped overnight, heaven!
Best of Scotland in 1 week itinerary (fully by public transport)
My Scotland travels (includes Edinburgh, Skye, Harris, Mull, Arran, Orkney, Loch Lomond, Islay, Oban, Speyside fest)
That train is more frequently associated with Harry Potter -- the Glennfinnen viaduct is featured in the Potter films as the kids go to and from Hogwarts! But you'll love the train. Please take a couple of ferry excursions from Maillaig to Skye, Lewis, Mull and Iona if possible. Bring some cash for drinks and food on the ferry and take loads of pictures!
Whisky, Castles and Food a speciality.
