Do you have any suggestions for visiting Oban in July? I'll be there for 3 nights travelling solo by public transport.

Hey @virginiamacd Oban is a gorgeous place to visit & I do have some recommendations for you.
- The town has a distillery, brewery, a beautiful viewpoint & lots of great seafood. You can spend half a day to a day exploring the town itself.
- Isle of Mull day trip: Hop onto a CalMac ferry to Craignure and catch a connecting bus to Tobermory to see the beautiful island that is Mull. You may also choose to see the Duart castle while visiting the isle.
- Isle of Staffa day trip: If you can manage some seasickness, the Isle of Staffa is simply unmissable. There are day tours departing from Oban.
- On the train in or back from Glasgow, I highly recommend getting off at the Loch Awe station and visiting Kilchurn castle (or atleast photographing it from the loch bank). One of the best castles in Scotland!

Its my pleasure @virginiamacd, if you do not have time to get off the train from Oban, try to sit on the right side of the train (facing the front) till you reach Crianlarich station and then on the left side of the train to get the best lakeside views. That stretch is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the UK (unless you've already taken the train to reach Skye via Mallaig in which case, you've traversed most of the route).I'm Anirudh, an Indian travel blogger who has explored a lot of Scotland by public transport. @virginiamacd As @Horizons has mentioned Mull is not to be missed. It's stunning. If you check out my blog you'll find several Mull posts there with lots of ideas. I've been visiting the island since childhood and adore the place.
You'll love Oban too as it's a great base for exploring. The nearby Slate Isles are a must. You can cross the Atlantic Ocean by bridge! I stayed near Oban recently and you'll find some of my highlights from that trip in the post below.

Hello @virginiamacd . I spent four days in Oban, spring 2016, travelling by coach from Portree via transfer at Fort William. I have an accommodation recommendation, the Dunheanish Guest House on Ardconnel Rd. It was affordably luxurious for a solo traveller, ideal hosts, delicious breakfasts, conveniently adjacent to McCaig's Tower and mere minutes walk from the harbour, train station, downtown core. The view over the harbour toward Mull was spectacular.
Oban was one of my favourite places in Scotland. Beautiful town for walking and exploring, many island hopping opportunities.
The Potting Shed cafe is worth looking into for a healthy, hearty, well-priced midday meal. The planted tea pots caught my eye.
The journey by rail from Oban to Glasgow was lovely, if that's your next destination.

I think if you hire a car you'll see more of the island.
As for poles, I like them on long, overnight treks with a heavy pack (tent, stove, food, clothes) as they do make things easier on the knees. However, I was travelling with just a carry-on-sized bag for over a month and staying at B&Bs. That, and that I didn't think they'd clear airport security meant I didn't take mine with me.
I guess it depends on how much stuff you want to pack around and if your knees or hips would be better off with the use of poles while hiking.

As previously mentioned the slate islands are really worth a visit - very easy to get to Easdale on public transport - the no.418. bus leaves from outside the Bank of Scotland which is opposite the train station in Oban and brings you directly to the small village of Ellenabeich. A 2 minute ferry ride gets you over to the car-free island of Easdale, home of the world stone skimming championships !

*The other favourite guest house? Inchgeal Lodge, Ballater. If Royal Deeside and Balmoral Castle are calling you, do try to stay at Diane's gorgeous accommodations.
JansVans just outside of Portree allows pre-booking on-line, the rates were good, car immaculate, excellent customer service. Manual transmission autos cost less than automatics. Single track is easy to get used to, numerous conveniently located passing places, courteous drivers.
Here you go, The Quiraing, Trotternish Peninsula, first destination I headed for when I picked up my wee Peugeot. Breathtakingly beautiful hike.
I'd be happy to send along your good greetings, 'slainte'. Guess I better brush up on my gailic.
Do you feel like you needed trekking poles when you were there? Trying to decide if I should take some. I'll be 4 days in Elgol and I understand the hiking is incredible there as well.
