It depends where you're planning on visiting and how long you're here for. If you're planning on doing the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig then you could extend that by a trip over to Skye, although you'd be relying on public transport. If you can hire a car then you'll get a lot more flexibility.
One of my favourite journeys is to head down the A82 from Inverness (via Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle) to Fort William and Glen Coe. Depending on fitness a walk up Ben Nevis is a good option if you have time. Glen Coe is spectacular any time of year. On to Oban and get the ferry to Barra. It's a long ferry ride but it's a good one to do if you like seabird and whale/dolphin watching. The beaches on Barra are great for such a wee Island and the nightlife in Castlebay can be surprisingly lively on a Friday night! From Barra head North through the Uists (via the ferry) and then catch another ferry from North Uist to Harris. The road from Leverburgh to Tarbert is quite special and Seilebost beach will take your breath away. On the way on to Lewis you could visit the Calanais Stones (a million times better than Stonehenge in my opinion!), The Carloway Broch and the Blackhouse Village at Gearannan. You've got Ness up on the North of the Island (home of the famous delicacy - Guga, you should definitely sample that if you get a chance, it's amazing...) and then you could finish off in the Western Isles by buying a stash of Stornoway Black Pudding from Charley Barleys in town.

There are lots of festivals in August if you fancy attending some events. There are many in Edinburgh and quite a few around Scotland as well.
