Train Connections

Visiting in April and have been attempting to plan a train ride from Edinburgh to Stirling Castle. Can anyone provide info on station location in Edinburgh. I checked Scotland Rail website but unable to find answer. Should I also purchase my ticket before arriving in Scotland? I would like to have early departure ticket, spend the day in Stirling and return back to Edinburgh around five. Thanks for any info,

    Hi Diana, if you’re taking a train from Edinburgh, the most central station is Edinburgh Waverley. Haymarket Station is based towards the other end of Princes Street. Here’s a map (attached) so that you can see. The advantage of an advance ticket, is that may get a cheaper price. But often you must travel on the train you have booked. If you prefer to have flexibility, it may be sensible to buy an open day return ticket. Hope this helps.

    Wow!!! Thank you scothighlands for the great map. It will be extremely helpful. I am staying at B+B hotel on Rothesay Pl. and know now the location of the railway from there. I will also purchase the open day return ticket. Thank you for helping me.

    @Diana If you do consider further local rail journeys during your stay, consider buying the Central Scotland rover pass for unlimited rail journeys in the local area (including Edinburgh - Stirling) as long as the first train is after 9:15 am on a weekday. As the journey takes an hour, you'll get to Stirling Castle by 11 am in the worst case and spend the day there.

    The advantage of the pass is that you can consider say taking the train to Linlithgow Palace (birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots), the Borders (Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott) or to North Berwick (Bass Rock, lovely town). Costs 39 quid and well worth the money for a castle / history lover.
