Lerwick

The main town in Shetland, Lerwick is a standalone gem. This seafaring settlement has grown slowly but surely and is now a bustling port for trade, business and visitors to the isles.

It may come with a proud maritime heritage but it certainly hasn't all been plain sailing for Lerwick. The town has been burnt down twice in its history! Today, it offers visitors an intriguing insight into the ancient Norse roots of the islands, as well as friendly accommodation and the perfect starting point for exploring the rest of Shetland.

Shetland Museum & Archives

Wander along Commercial Street, and visit the museum to learn more about the unique cultural background and the story of the islands.

Walk along the harbour

The striking natural harbour has allowed for a booming herring trade and is now dotted with sailing vessels, private yachts and fishing boats. 

Shetland Textiles Museum

Admire the knitwear, tweed and crafts from local exhibitors at the cosy and inviting Shetland Textiles Museum.

Lerwick Brewery

Thirsty work?  Sample some of the local ales and beers and explore the inner workings of the brewery, which is hidden away on the heathery hillside of Lerwick.

North Sea Cycle Route

Pedal your way through the town, with quiet country roads leading you across the rest of Shetland.

Travel in Lerwick

Getting here

You can catch the ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick, or if you're island hopping some routes, stop via Kirkwall in Orkney. Keep your eyes peeled! Depending on the time of year, you might see dolphins or porpoises from the ship, as well as clusters of seabirds.

Many ferries also travel overnight, which means you can spend more time enjoying the islands after a peaceful sleep at sea.

Getting around

When you land on the island, you can enjoy short inter-island flights from Tingwall Airport (just 6 miles outside of Lerwick) to Fair Isle, Foula, Out Skerries and Papa Stour. There are also ferry connections to the other islands and regular buses to take you between destinations.
