A Big House near Edinburgh...?

Hello All.
I am planning a weekend away for a friend's Hen and she has asked that we go to Edinburgh for festival in August (yay) but I would quite like us to stay in a nice house - something interesting with historical or cultural significance - that is no more than half hour away from the city centre.
There are 12 people.
I have looked on many holiday rental sites but haven't found anywhere that is both a lovely house and easily commutable to the city.
Am I asking for the impossible??
Any help gratefully received.
