June Trip

We are planning our first trip to Scotland from the middle June 2017 to the end of the month. I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me what to expect for weather? What clothes to bring? We will be touring most of the country. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Isle of Skye, Isle of Mull, St. Andrews and many more Towns through out the upper area of Scotland. Is there anything else we need to know? Swimming? Thank you for all your help.

@kcfaye, as it will be Summer the weather can be lovely. Do not forget your suncream (no joke) it may not be often but when the sun does come out it can be quite dangerous. The typical Scottish weather can change very quickly so bring the appropriate clothing, especially for Skye & Mull.
What kind of things do you like seeing & doing and maybe we can tell you a little more about where to go and what to avoid.

Hi @kcfaye. Although the temperature will be warmer, the wind can be chilly at times. Capris will be fine, along with a t shirt and perhaps a zipped hoodie, also a light jacket in case of rain (I would wear these during June) I'm fairly certain it wont be too cold.....although Id be too scared to wear a swim costume.

I visited the Gairloch in July a couple of years ago and the weather was soo hot, but the only way to enjoy a paddle in the sea without getting too cold was to wear a wet suit!

Kcfaye, we will be arriving in Scotland on June 2nd for two weeks. Thus far, my biggest dilemma is trying to figure out clothing to pack!

@Kraines @kcfaye Always carry a water + windproof jacket with a hood (example of one we own). If it gets too windy or horizontal raining, it will protect you. It may not be the most stylish but really gets the job done. Shorts seems like a stretch and swimsuits only if you are comfortable swimming in cold waters, many locals here use wetsuits (which you can hire in some places I think). Hope this helps.

@Kraines depending on where you want to hike, only the very advanced ones have some boggy ground to cover where boots are better. But I just wear a good pair of sport shoes with a fair amount of grip while hiking. Bring a lot of socks if hiking for obvious reason

@Kraines to each their own, I was camping around Scotland for a whole month and walked 10+ kms on many days, something I know I can't do with boots. You should absolutely bring your boots if that is your choice of comfortable walking footwear because any Scotland trip involves a fair amount of walking in variable terrain

Think layers, layers, layers.
It can get warm in the middle of the day and then it can get very chilly in the evening or if the sun has disappeared for the afternoon.

Prepare for possibly four seasons in one day: bright, crisp sunlight in the morning; windy spells that take your breath away; the odd downpour; expect the unexpected; don't expect searing heat or dry, dusty days. Perhaps some smarter clothes for an evening out.

It's quite fun trying to dress for the weather in Scotland. We often get it wrong and get caught out. You can always buy a jumper, scarf or extra layer when you are here.

Thank-you for your quick reply. We are just basically traveling the country. Hoping to see a couple distilleries, the fairy pools, part of our group loves outlanders series. Not sure what the country offers, not into hiking or biking. Would love to golf but again not a option this time. We are actually coming for the McLean Clan reunion on Mull so we are making a vacation out of it. Anything you think is a must? avoidance? hope this helps. Spending a day in Glasgow and a day in Edinburgh then just touring as we go. Thanks for any and all help.

Also Fishypro, forgot to ask, so should we bring shorts, jeans, capris, swimsuits, been told weather is rather cool and usually jeans and capris (for me) will work. Opinion please, I know there is no way to actually predict the weather this far out but am at a loss as to what to pack.

@Kraines I would say boots yes, absolutely if you plan on hiking seriously. Not only to protect your ankles on rough terrain but also to keep you dry. Many hiking paths are rocky and aren't smooth under foot so you'll require sturdy footwear. Proper hiking foorwear will also offer a better degree of protection against slipping as it usually comes with a Vibram sole or similar. You'll also want them to be waterproof/goretex as you'll encounter boggy patches of ground which will soak right through training shoes. Even wet grass can soak your feet in record time. I hike lots and always wear proper footwear and decent hiking socks (Bridgedale). I usually wear hiking boots or study hiking/trail shoes. If you can take both so you have a spare to allow time for drying if they get wet. My preferred brand is Berghaus as I find them most comfortable to hike in but I also wear North Face and Merrell.

Thank you for all of the information. I am packing for our June trip to Scotland. I never thought of bringing a spare pair of shoes. I am used to layering so I already had that planned. Thank you again.
