A Newbie week in Scenic Scotland
Hi guys, I'll be driving through Britain late May, June with my wife (both 62 with a bit life in us) and have one week set aside for Scotland. If we aim to kick off in Glasgow (from the Lakes District) and finish in Edinburgh, would you offer some advice re the most scenic drives and routes? I've researched till my head hurts and can't seem to find an itinerary or patch together a single route. Plus, do we need to pre book accommodation? It'd be nice to keep it flexible as much as possible. We're from Australia so enjoy long drives but appreciate we don't know local conditions. Its the scenery and history we will enjoy most of all. Should we try to get to one of the Isles? Your thoughts greatly appreciated. Matt

There are a number of 1 week itineraries written up by both VisitScotland & travel bloggers (myself included). My 1 week itinerary would have you visit not 1 but 2 isles (Mull & Skye). The plus side of my itinerary is that it packs a lot of the top spots I deem to be unmissable in 1 week, the negative is that you're not spending time at leisure at any point. Here is my map.
Full description with pictures of my itinerary can be found here on my blog. You need 2 changes to the map above, 1) a start from the Lake District & 2) drive from Inverness to Edinburgh via Aviemore & the Cairngorms.
I hope you can extend your stay from 1 week to a bit more. Lake District has the best scenery in England IMO but Scotland blows that out of the water.
You will need to book your accommodation in Skye as the island is full during the summer. The rest should be fine but try to book 24 hours ahead of time (Youth Hostels are a good fallback).
Top tip: Do not miss the drive from Fort William to Mallaig (dubbed Road to the Isles). It is spectacular yet overlooked.
Best of Scotland in 1 week itinerary (fully by public transport)
My Scotland travels (includes Edinburgh, Skye, Harris, Mull, Arran, Orkney, Loch Lomond, Islay, Oban, Speyside fest)

The advice above is great but please also check VisitScotland's section on driving/road trips. You will not be disappointed anywhere you decide to go to in Scotland. Wishing you a great holiday in Scotland!!
