Midges on Skye in June?

Hi all, I'm new here so please be gentle with me;) My boyfriend and I are planning to visit Isle of Skye this year, possibly second half of June. I've been there before 2 years ago in August and there was a lot midges, like millions attacking me and my friend and spoiling the whole trip (We were camping). Unfortunately I do get allergic reaction to midges bites so I'd rather avoid the time when they are the most active. I've searched the internet for info, as well as this forum and it looks like July/August are the worst. And how about June? Is it more likely to be midge free than for example August? I know it all depends on the weather etc. Unfortunately we can't take time off work earlier than June, but we really want to visit Skye, it's such a beautiful place! We're planning to stay in hostel, I would not dare to go camping on Skye ever again :p Oh. And just before you tell me to use it - Skin so soft does absolutely nothing for me...midges still bite me. Even deet seems to work on me less than others, for some reason...

I'll be very grateful for any advice:)

June is not peak midge season but they will be about, so try the east coast instead, the midge is far less prevelant :-) when I was growing up, there would be almost none. Now there are a few but nowhere near the numbers of the highlands and west coast. I think with this winter being mild, they may be worse than normal, but I'm not an entomologist so could be wrong :-)

Although the east coast is a little cooler it is normally a little drier to compensate. There's loads of accommodation options around Aberdeenshire and Angus. If you go a little inland you'd find places like the Clova hotel offering hostel type bunk accommodation too. From there there are some beautiful walks available, right on the doorstep.

Skin so soft doesn't work for me, fortunately I'm not allergic as such, they're just irritating little blighters.

I hope this is helpful, I know it doesn't answer your question but it may solve your problem :-)

  • Thank you for your reply and advice. I will research east coast then and we might change our plans and visit Skye next year early in the spring to avoid the little nasty creatures;)
