My wife and I (in our late 60's) are planning a 10 day road trip in Scotland in mid-September. What sort of weather conditions can we expect, and any suggestions of an appropriate itinerary (not too hectic) would be appreciated. We have visited Scotland once before some years ago, but only saw Edinburgh and Inverness.

I'd suggest picking one coast and sticking to it for 10 days of non-hectic travel while seeing that coast in depth. My recommendation is the West Coast starting & ending at Glasgow. Pick a couple of islands from Arran, Mull, Skye, Islay or Harris and combine them with staples like Glencoe, Loch Lomond & Fort William and you'll have a cracking itinerary (I've linked to my own experiences in these spots).
The weather question can only be answered 48 hours in advance! Honestly, it can rain at any time, more so in September so be prepared for the rain and winds. There are many scenic pubs on the way to see out these rains.
Best of Scotland in 1 week itinerary (fully by public transport)
