Niche statue - The Virgin and Child

Niche statue of the Virgin and Child originally from the west buttress of Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders. The Virgin is defaced but retains finely carved crown, veil and robes. The headless Child is held on her left arm and a flower is held in her right hand. The original canopy over the the statue and the supporting corbel are also elaborately carved. 1200s.
