William the Lion (1165-1214), silver penny.
The obverse of this coin depicts a bust of William I , faing left, with sceptre in front and the inscription 'LE REI WILAM' at legend.
The reverse shows a short voided cross with star in each quarter, with the inscription 'HVE WALTER O', indicating the Edinburgh and Perth moneyers working jointly.
William I is traditionally associated with founding Arbroath Abbey.
Known during his reign as Garbh, 'the rough', he later became known as William the Lion, possibly because the chronicler Fordun called him ‘leo justiciae’, lion of justice.
