Head carving
Object Detail
This grimacing head is worked in fine-grained sandstone. It is carved in a naturalistic manner, showing the head of a balding man, smiling and showing his teeth or tongue. The hair is depicted by parallel wavy lines, and the eyebrows and chin are rather pronounced. This may have been a charicature portrait.
