Marking 20 years of the Scottish Parliament
A year-long programme to mark 20 years since the creation of the Scottish Parliament has been announced.
Designed to showcase the positive impact the Scottish Parliament has had on the lives of those living in Scotland over the last two decades, the programme will aim to reach people from all over Scotland. It will include an ‘open event’ in June, the launch of a new public exhibition telling the story of the Parliament, a series of family days held at Holyrood, and a competition for young people to write a letter to the Parliament on their hopes and aspirations for the Parliament over the next 20 years.
Details of the full programme will be released throughout the year with many opportunities for people across Scotland to be involved. Please find details of the two main events taking place on Saturday 29th June below: the Queen’s Address and our Birthday Celebration.
QUEEN’S ADDRESS
The Queen will formally address MSPs in the Parliament’s Debating Chamber on 29 June, almost 20 years to the day since the Parliament officially assumed its legal powers.
The day will commence in the morning with a procession of the Crown of Scotland to the Parliament; followed by The Queen’s address to Members of the Scottish Parliament and invited guests in the Parliament’s Debating Chamber. Find out more.

Parliament’s 20th Birthday Celebration
The highlight of the year-long programme will be an event on Saturday 29 June.
From 3pm, the Parliament will open its doors to the people of Scotland for an afternoon of celebration and commemoration. Everyone is invited to join the Parliament in marking its 20th birthday at this unique event.
Looking back at two decades of achievements, there will be live music from across the eras, from a wide range of performers; retro games, face painting and lots more.
Looking forward to the next 20 years we will also have a future-focused area showcasing technology of the future and environmental priorities for protecting Scotland’s natural environment.
The event is free and unticketed but you can RSVP on Facebook to stay updated.
