Watson studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and the Royal College of Art, London. After moving to the United States in the 1970s, he gained a reputation as a fashion photographer working for magazines such as Vogue, The Face, Rolling Stone and Newsweek. He won a Grammy Award in 1975 for best LP cover design.
Renowned for his striking portraiture, his land- and cityscape photography is similarly bold and dramatic in approach.
