The spirit of nineteenth-century invention is embodied in Mount Stuart – a feat of Victorian engineering, this neo-gothic mansion was one of the most technologically advanced houses of its age. Mary, Queen of Scots Exhibition
2 May – 27 October 2019
Mary Stuart (1542-1587) – or Mary, Queen of Scots as she is commonly known – has long been a source of fascination, in Scotland and beyond. She has been the subject of numerous paintings, plays, books and films – and no wonder, when her biography reads like a Gothic novel. Her tragic tale includes three doomed marriages, alleged adultery, murder, imprisonment and execution. While many of the sordid details of her life and death are well-documented, others still are shrouded in mystery and obscured by centuries of rumor, romance and fantasy. This exhibition looks at both the real historical figure and the romantic cultural icon.

Visual Arts Programme – Martin Boyce
An Inn for Phantoms of the Outside and In

Mount Stuart Trust is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by Martin Boyce this summer.
Martin presents a major outdoor commission in the landscaped grounds of Mount Stuart. Inspired by the memory of a tennis court long since dismantled, his ongoing interest in abandoned and disused spaces is awakened. The original court is undocumented, a relic from the 1970’s, and by connecting with previous works such as the iconic 2002 Tramway installation Our Love is Like the Flowers, the Rain, the Sea and the Hours, Martin continues his exploration of sites in between use and misuse: “one place shipwrecked within another”.
