This section contains news and updates on our most recent development schemes and publications including reports and statistics.
The latest publication reports can be found in the window at the top right hand side of this webpage. These cover both the annual Unintentional Injuries publication and the most recent quarterly Emergency Department (ED) statistics at Scotland level with a link to more detailed data by NHS Board and site location.
July 2018 - Concerns regarding the recording practices and the quality of Accident and Emergency waiting times data in NHS Lothian lead the regulatory arm of the UK Statistics Authority committing to undertake a review of ISD's compliance of this publication with the Code of Practice. A letter regarding the National Statistics status of the A&E waiting times statistics from the UKSA to ISD was published here on 28 March 2018. This was followed by a response 
from ISD's Head of Profession for Statistics. On 6 July 2018 ISD's Head of Profession issued an update by letter on the steps taken to address recommendations regarding A&E statistics in Scotland. On 24 July a further letter from the UKSA acknowledging the work that ISD had undertaken was released here.
06 March 2018 - Further to the issues with recording practices in NHS Lothian, ISD does not have concerns about the quality of the published A&E statistics for other NHS Boards.
21 December 2017 - The regulatory arm of the UK Statistics Authority has committed to undertake a review of the compliance of this publication with the Code of Practice for statistics as a result of the concerns around the quality of the statistics it contains.
5th December 2017 - ISD is aware of an investigation into recording practices of A&E waiting times in NHS Lothian. When the investigation has reported, ISD will consider whether any revisions are required to previously published A&E waiting times statistics.
31st July 2017 - The 2016/17 update of the Recording Completeness of 'Optional' Data Items in the A&E Datamart is now available here. This details the recording completion for each of the optional data items that provide additional information relating to a patient's attendance, from financial year 2010/2011 to 2016/2017. It also shows the breakdown of attendances by ED and MIU/Other sites, and the percentage of records that are from episode and aggregate submissions from financial year 2007/2008 to 2016/2017.

The first publication using the linked data in the Urgent Care Datamart was published on the 28th March 2017. This publication looks at emergency and urgent care activity and patient journeys. It includes data from NHS 24, Scottish Ambulance Service, A&E, Primary Care Out of Hours and Emergency Inpatient services.
The third publication looking in more detail at Out of Hours Primary care services was published on the 28th of February. This publication also contained comparisons with A&E data.
17 October 2016 - Video release: When do patients attend Emergency Departments? - We have released a video providing an overview of the daily and weekly patterns of attendance at Emergency Departments across Scotland. This video compliments the most recent quarterly publication on the patient pathways through the Emergency Department. 6 September 2016- Weekly update of Emergency Department Activity and Waiting Time Statistics Announcement - We are planning to amend how we source and publish this information. Changes we are planning to implement are changes to the data source and the layout of the publication tables. Please see the announcement for more information.

12 January 2016 - Emergency Care Activity - Patient pathways through the Emergency Department: This is the second in a series of roughly quarterly publications and reports on attendances at Emergency Departments in Scotland. This report looks at the pathways patients take into and out of Emergency Departments and the services they make contact with on their journey.
29 September 2015 - Emergency Care Activity: This is the first in a series of roughly quarterly publications and reports on attendances at Emergency Departments in Scotland. This report looks at the demographic of individuals attending Emergency Departments and how this affects rates of attendance in NHS Scotland.
16 June 2015 - The latest release of NHS Performs includes for the first time official statistics sourced from aggregate figures supplied by NHS Boards to ISD Scotland on attendances at Emergency Departments (EDs) across Scotland. The information presented in this release continues the trend of statistics previously collected by the Scottish Government on the number of attendances, and length of time patients spend in EDs.

There is no change to ISD's monthly National Statistics publication on ED activity and Waiting Times, sourced from the A&E Data mart.
February 2015 - Please note that the new monthly releases of A&E statistics will not include a full publication report. Each release will include a publication summary and interactive excel spreadsheet including attendance figures, waits for admission, transfer or discharge over 4, 8 and 12 hours and admissions to hospital following attendance at A&E for each hospital and health board. A PDF document showing attendances and 4, 8 and 12 hour waits at health board level is also available for customers who have difficulty in accessing the excel spreadsheet.
November 2014 - A&E dataset review. ISD along with representatives from NHS Boards, Scottish Government and College of Emergency Medicine are reviewing the data submitted nationally about attendances at A&E services. A consultation document will be issued to NHS Boards Spring 2015 to gather their feedback on the proposals. Once the responses have been received, ISD and NHS Boards will review processes to identify if IT systems need amended. After this, estimates of when the updated data will be available can be produced.
September 2014 - Data presented in Table 5 of the Unintentional Injuries publication, published February 2014, have been discovered to be incorrect and have now been amended. The numbers of deaths presented previously included all ages instead of adults only (ages 15 and over) and the Standard Mortality Rates (SMRs) and subsequently their Confidence Intervals were incorrectly calculated. The revised data resulted in the number of deaths decreasing in all mainland NHS Board compared to the figures originally published. Also the SMRs and confidence intervals for all NHS Boards have changed. The difference that the revisions have made are presented in Table 5.1. In summary the magnitude of the change varies by NHS Board. The largest change to the numbers of deaths affects NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde with a decrease of 17 deaths. The largest change to the SMR affects NHS Borders where the SMR decreased by 43.6.
