Staff Governance

Introduction

Each NHS Board in Scotland must operate within the NHS Scotland Governance Framework. Staff governance is a key and integral part of this framework and focuses on how staff are managed and feel they are managed.

The five key elements of the Staff Governance Standard require all NHS Boards to ensure staff are:

  • Well informed.
  • Appropriately trained and developed.
  • Involved in decisions.
  • Treated fairly and consistently, with dignity and respect, in an environment where diversity is valued.
  • Provided with a continuously improving and safe working environment, promoting the health and wellbeing of staff, patients and the wider community.

Further information can be found on the NHS Scotland staff governance website.

Monitoring employee experience

The National Staff Survey gives all staff the opportunity to provide feedback on their experience of working for NHS Scotland. The results are used to identify areas where things are going well and potential areas for improvement. It is also used to monitor trends and assess organisational performance against the five key elements of the Staff Governance Standard.

The results of the last NHS Scotland Staff Survey (carried out in 2013) are available on the Scottish Government website.
