That the Parliament celebrates World Wildlife Day, which will be marked on 3 March 2020; considers that this year’s theme, Sustaining all Life on Earth, is vital for raising awareness of wild animal and plant species as key components of the world’s biodiversity; considers that there is a global biodiversity crisis and that this is inextricably linked to the climate emergency; notes with concern the recent report from the UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, which outlines the forces that affect biodiversity and ecosystems and can encourage an urgent global response from governments around the world in making transformative changes to the way nature is protected and restored while there is still time; further notes the recent report, State of Nature Scotland Report 2019, by government agencies and leading wildlife organisations, which calls attention to how Scotland’s biodiversity is suffering from the impact of pressures such as habitat fragmentation, climate change and invasive non-native species, which it understands has resulted in a 49% decrease in Scottish species; acknowledges the work done by community groups across Scotland, such as the River Ythan Trust, to tackle invasive non-native species, and recognises what it considers the importance of Scottish Environment LINK’s Species Champions initiative, which has 104 MSPs signed up to promote and protect Scotland’s wildlife through raising awareness within Scotland’s political community while shaping policy to promote and secure biodiversity.

That the Parliament congratulates Ythan Community Trust on receiving £100,000 from Aberdeenshire Council’s allocation of the first tranche of marine-sourced funding from the Scottish Crown Estate; notes that, as part of the devolution settlement, revenue generated from the Crown Estate’s marine assets within inshore waters now accrues to the Scottish Government, which in turn devolves a proportion to the 32 local authorities; understands that the Ythan Community Trust will use the award to help improve disabled access and parking at Newburgh Links to support the increasing number of people coming to the area to view the grey seals that gather at the estuary; commends the Ythan Community Trust for its continuing efforts to improve access at the Newburgh Links to encourage viewing of the seals without disturbing the animals, and wishes all involved well.

That the Parliament congratulates 16-year-old Brenna Collie on being named the Young Photography Winner at the 2019 Scottish Portrait Awards; understands that Brenna, who has had treatment for a stroke, won with her entry, Trapped, in which she aimed to capture the night that she became unwell; notes that this was part of her Higher Photography portfolio, which she used to document her recovery; commends Brenna for her voluntary work with the Stroke Association to raise awareness that, although this condition can happen to anyone of any age, with the right treatment, care and support, it is possible to succeed in rebuilding lives; applauds Brenna on her success, and wishes her well.
