The First Minister continued that theme of Scotland being open for business as she attended a breakfast event with US investors.

Nicola and chief executive of Scottish Enterprise, Lena Wilson, addressed more than 40 people to promote ongoing opportunities for US firms to take advantage of Scotland’s competitive business environment, world-class sectors and talent pool.

The event was co-hosted by Ernst & Young, which recently released a report reinforcing Scotland as an attractive place to do business.

While at the event, the First Minister welcomed the news that global data company, Spire, is planning to open a European headquarters in Glasgow which will create 50 jobs.

It’ll be the company’s third global office, further reinforcing Scotland’s growing importance to the space industry worldwide, and has been supported by £1.9m in grant funding from Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise.

The First Minister said:

“This announcement clearly demonstrates Scotland’s growing influence in the space technology industry. Our cost effective and supportive business environment, strong and highly skilled workforce, and world-class universities are not only enabling the development of Scottish companies but also attracting the world’s most innovative companies such as Spire to Scotland.”

It was time for a cup of tea after that busy morning and the First Minister was off to The Lowell Hotel in Manhattan to welcome its deal to stock products from Scotland’s The Wee Tea Plantation.

It’s the company’s first deal in the USA and Nicola was joined for a brew by the firm’s master blender Jamie Russell and Scottish actor Alan Cumming.
