First Minister hails successful US trip

14 June 2015

As her official visit to the United States came to an end, the First Minister welcomed the close, long-standing partnership between the two countries.

While in the U.S., the First Minister met with companies that are currently investing in Scotland, as well as those looking to invest in the future. She also hosted – jointly with Ernst and Young and Scottish Development International – a breakfast event for business leaders and potential investors.

The packed programme of events focussed on key Scottish Government priorities including growing the economy, tackling inequality and improving health and education in Scotland.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said:

“The main purpose of my trip to the United States was to showcase Scotland as an investment destination and to promote Scottish business in the US. We are very keen to encourage new companies and existing companies to invest in Scotland and do business, and I was pleased to meet with a number of businesses who are doing so.

“Those that invest in Scotland and those considering investing will find that we have a fantastic environment to do business, just as we offer a fantastic environment to live, study and work.

“Whether for global multi-million pound companies or small local start-ups, Scotland remains hugely popular as a place to do business.

“During my stay I had great pleasure in meeting a Scottish company that is now breaking into the US market. This was particularly interesting as the company’s product is one that most people would never associate with Scotland – a Scottish company is growing tea in Perthshire and selling it around the world.

“The second purpose of the trip, which was just as important, was to reaffirm and reiterate the importance of the long-standing, close relationship that our two countries have. One that is founded on very solid foundations and one that I hope continues long into the future

“It has been my privilege to be in the United States over the past few days. I had a wonderful reception everywhere I went – even Jon Stewart treated me well on The Daily Show, which I am eternally grateful for! But overall it was a fantastic few days. I look forward to visiting again and I also look forward to welcoming as many from the US as possible to Scotland in the years to come.”
