Biography
Overview
I was elected to the new Scottish Parliament in 1999 and have since served as MSP for Eastwood, the West of Scotland, and as the Presiding Officer from 2016.
Born in the Highlands, I studied History at Edinburgh University and pursued a career as a BBC News television producer.
Claire and I live in Busby with our 6 children.
What motivated you to become an MSP?
As a student, it was the damaging social and economic unfairness of the early '80s that motivated me to join a political party. I then worked in and around politics on BBC programmes like Breakfast with Frost, but I did not think of standing for election until devolution.
The opportunity to be part of a new parliament, helping to tackle inequality and discrimination and shaping a better country was irresistible. Even when political decisions have not gone my way, standing up for constituents and providing a voice for the disadvantaged is still the most rewarding of so many fulfilling experiences.
