Biography
Overview
I've been an MSP since being elected for the Rutherglen constituency in 2007 and 2011, before becoming a list MSP in 2016.
I was brought up in Halfway, Cambuslang and went on to study at Glasgow College of Technology (now Glasgow Caledonian). Prior to being an MSP, I worked for Scottish Power, as well as in computing and accounting.
What motivated you to become an MSP?
When I was 17, the local steelworks in Halfway closed, due to the new, hard-line economic policies of the Thatcher government. I saw how this impacted people in my community, which led me to join the Labour Party. I have remained active in the local Labour party since the early 1980s, which eventually led to me becoming an MSP.
In Parliament, I'm kept busy with raising local issues in the Chamber, as well as with my roles in the party and in CPGs.
